"Forgiveness is the screwdriver we use to pry open our hearts.
For nearly twenty years I have used knitting as a metaphor to create complex forms to discuss complex issues. My work transforms knitting, a traditional woman’s craft, into a metaphor that expands the feminist tenants of liberation, diversity & justice." - Sharon Kagan

Fall 2020 Compassion in Action opens at Alfred University
|
“Compassion in Action” is a journey of discovery and understanding. I believe that each of us can choose to initiate a profound healing process to alleviate generational trauma experienced by the American Indigenous peoples and the American settlers that committed genocide, Holocaust survivors and the Nazis who murdered millions, or the descendants of Black slaves and White slave owners. It only takes one person to begin the process of freeing themselves from a painful legacy to begin the process of change for all generations.
Included in the exhibition will be the video/performance The Undoing: Forgiveness; the interactive sculpture/performance The Red Lotus; and the durational performance/installation Release Me.

Beautiful reflections and powerful creative research into the ways we knit and are knitted by the threads of our ancestral stories. There is a transformative quality that occurs in combining this sticky struggle, the perseverance and rawness of working with the hemp thread and the narratives of shared and personal wounds through the holocaust inheretance paired with loving kindness or Metta meditation.
--Dr. Larisa Barsley, creative researcher, depth psychologist. Australia
For next project on "self-forgiveness"...recommend you include the perspective of Buddhism which is very different from the Western one....I hope you don’t fall into the trap of making the Self very important like the trap of self-image, self-compassion - which only reinforce the Western belief of an autonomously existing solid entity called I/me.
--Ravi Pradhan, Asian Mindfulness Dojo, Bangkok, Thailand

It was incredibly rewarding to have this in-depth conversation with Sara Schulting-Kranz on her podcast, Live Boldly. This is just a short clip from that rich conversation. The full episode can be heard at Live Boldly, The Art of Forgiveness.

Dear Friends and Supporters,
It continues to be an honor to receive people's intimate stories of forgiveness. I've been brought to tears and laughed so hard. The stories that are showing up now are ones of self-forgiveness. So I am following that lead.
There are 4 invitations to participate. Each asking its own question. Have you ever been forgiven/Have you ever forgiven someone or something? Do you need to forgive yourself/Have you forgiven yourself? What/Who will you never forgive? Are you a Palestinian or Arab or Jewish Israeli who has been able to forgive the other?
If you have a story you'd like to share you can find each of the invitations on the contact page of my website.
Best,
Sharon
